Real Franconian Kerwa between Aufseß and Hollfeld

Moggendorf is one of those tiny villages in Franconian Switzerland where the Kirchweih is still celebrated as it was a hundred years ago: without admission, without fuss, but with brass music, Franconian beer, and the whole village at the festival grounds. The festival is organizationally part of the municipality of Aufseß in the district of Bayreuth (Upper Franconia) and is located in the administrative association of Hollfeld. The Welkendorf-Moggendorf Volunteer Fire Department is responsible, organizing the Kerwa at the end of May for decades and ensuring the typical, warm atmosphere.

A Weekend for Community and Tradition

The event kicks off on Saturday with the Kirchweih church service at 5:30 PM — a short service outdoors or in the village chapel, depending on the weather. Afterwards, the beer garden on the festival grounds opens, and the celebration continues into the night. On Sunday, the festival service at 2:00 PM is the focus, followed by the actual festival and children's entertainment with games, sweets, and small competitions for the youngest. Admission is free on both days.

Franconian Switzerland: The Right Destination Around

Moggendorf is located in the middle of the Franconian Switzerland nature park, one of Bavaria's most famous hiking areas. Visitors to the Kirchweih can ideally combine it with a hike in the Aufseßtal valley, a visit to the four Aufseß breweries (Aufseß is considered the village with the highest brewery density in the world), or a tour of the Unter- and Oberaufseß castles. In May, the meadows are in full bloom, the rocks glow, and the region is not yet overcrowded.

Admission and Directions

The Kirchweih Moggendorf is free as it is a pure village festival. The festival grounds are located directly in the Moggendorf district, about 30 minutes from Bayreuth via Hollfeld. Parking is available along the village road.
