Traditional Franconian Kerwa by the Kirwaboum from Großgeschaidt in Markt Heroldsberg
The Kirchweih Großgeschaidt is one of the most vibrant village Kerwas in the Erlangen-Höchstadt district. The festival days in 2026 are Friday, July 3rd to Monday, July 6th. The organizers are the Kirwaboum aus Großgeschaidt, the young men's association of the Großgeschaidt district within Markt Heroldsberg.
The program adheres to the choreography of the Franconian Kerwa, developed over generations:
The traditional bearers of the Franconian Kerwa are the Kirwaboum – young men from the village – who organize the festival with the Kerwamädchen (festival girls). The raising of the Kerwabaum on Saturday is a central element of Franconian custom: the freshly peeled tree is erected in front of the festival tent, decorated with colorful ribbons, wreaths, and symbols of the young men's association. Notably in Großgeschaidt is the special dance of the Kirwazwetschger – the youngest festival participants dancing around their own child-friendly tree.
Großgeschaidt is a district of Markt Heroldsberg, a market town in Middle Franconia within the Erlangen-Höchstadt district, northeast of Nuremberg. Heroldsberg, known for its Renaissance castle and picturesque location on the Hutgraben stream, is part of the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region. The Kerwa tradition in Großgeschaidt is directly connected to the dense Kerwa landscape of Middle Franconia, where over 70 Kerwas are celebrated from April to November.
The Franconian Kirchweih (»Kerwa«) is one of the most significant elements of Franconian tradition: originally commemorating the church consecration, it is now a four-day village festival with a festival tent, beer tapping, Kerwabaum, and the young men's association. Each Kerwa community has its own unique customs – in Großgeschaidt, these are the »Kirwazwetschger« dance and the »Betznaustanzn« to conclude the festival.
