Traditional summer fair in the Wiedtal on the second-to-last weekend of August
The Flammersfelder August-Kirmes is one of the most traditional folk festivals (Volksfeste) in northern Rhineland-Palatinate. It takes place annually on the second-to-last weekend of August, shaping late summer in the Wiedtal for generations. The local community of Flammersfeld is the organizer, and together with numerous local clubs, they put on a festival program that garners attention far beyond the Altenkirchen-Flammersfeld administrative district.
The "Flammersfelder August" has become a household name in the Westerwald. Generations of families plan their summer holidays around this weekend, and former residents of Flammersfeld travel from all over Germany to see friends and relatives again. The Kirmes thus fulfills an important social function: it is a festival of home, family, and encounters all in one.
At the center is the large festival tent with a stage and dance floor, where live bands and DJs provide entertainment on both evenings. Around the tent, a small festival mile emerges with a Ferris wheel, children's carousel, shooting galleries, candy stalls, and snack stands. Local clubs, from the fire department to the music association, serve the public and contribute to the familiar atmosphere.
An essential component is the traditional market (Krammarkt), which transforms the entire village center into an extensive shopping and strolling mile. Traders from the region offer clothing, household goods, sweets, and handicrafts. The combination of market activities, amusement ride romance, and festival tent atmosphere is what makes the event so appealing.
Behind the success of the Kirmes is Flammersfeld's strong club life. Dozens of volunteers are involved throughout the weekend, ensuring setup, dismantling, catering, and security. Thus, the Flammersfelder August is not just a folk festival but also a showcase of vibrant community spirit.
The 2026 edition of the Flammersfelder August-Kirmes will take place on Saturday, August 22nd, and Sunday, August 23rd. The event thus follows the traditional rhythm of the second-to-last weekend in August.
The festival tent remains the heart of the event. It is complemented by the market along the village streets, a small amusement mile, and a supporting program focused on local clubs. Updates on bands and times will be provided via the organizer's Facebook page.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the summer of 2026 via the Facebook channel "Flammersfelder August" and the community website. The structure will follow the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Carousels, Ferris wheel, shooting galleries, and food stalls will be open on both days. Local clubs, with their stalls and contributions, shape the image of the Kirmes.
