Traditional Franconian Kirchweih on the Bavarian Lower Main
The Kirchweih, affectionately called “Kerwa” in Franconia, is one of the most important traditional festivals in the communities of Lower Franconia. In Elsenfeld, a market town in the Miltenberg district in the state of Bavaria on the Bavarian Lower Main, between Spessart and Odenwald, the Kirchweih is an integral part of annual customs.
In Elsenfeld, the Kirchweih is celebrated according to the tradition of the Diocese of Würzburg on the second Sunday in November. This uniform date regulation – the “Allerweltskirchweih” (All Saints' Day Kirchweih) – was historically introduced to organize the multitude of local Kirchweih dates and still shapes the Kirchweih calendar of many Lower Franconian communities today.
The Kirchweih traditionally includes the Kirchweih church service, social gatherings in the inns and at local clubs, and seasonal Franconian specialties. The Kerwa is less a large folk festival with amusement rides and more a community-building village festival that brings the people of the market town together.
The Kirchweih Elsenfeld is part of the vibrant Franconian Kirchweih customs, which are still practiced today in the Miltenberg district and throughout Lower Franconia. It is an expression of regional identity and an integral part of community life.
In 2026, the Kirchweih in Elsenfeld will be celebrated on November 8, the second Sunday in November – the traditional Kirchweih date of the Diocese of Würzburg. The focus will be on the Kirchweih church service, social gatherings in the inns and at local clubs, and seasonal Franconian specialties. The Kerwa is a unifying festival for the village community and an expression of vibrant Franconian Kirchweih customs in the Miltenberg district.
