About Kirchweih Breitbrunn

The Kirchweih Breitbrunn is the annual village Kirchweih of the Lower Franconian municipality Breitbrunn in the Haßberge district. For years, the sports club VfR Hermannsberg-Breitbrunn has been the organizer, holding the Kirchweih in the sports hall due to the lack of an inn in the village center. Specialties include the Lower Franconian Bocksbraten (goat meat roast) and Fischessen (fish meal) – both dishes with genuine Franconian tradition. The Kirchweih runs annually around September 25th from Thursday to Monday; in 2026, it is expected from September 24th to 28th. Breitbrunn celebrated its 900th anniversary in 2023.

A Kirchweih in the Sports Hall

Breitbrunn is a municipality with around 900 inhabitants in the administrative community of Ebelsbach in the Haßberge district, Lower Franconia. Unlike many Franconian villages, there is no longer an inn in the village center – the Kirchweih has therefore been held in the Sporthalle Breitbrunn for years. The organizer is the local sports club VfR Hermannsberg-Breitbrunn, which organizes the festival weekend with volunteer commitment.

Lower Franconian Specialties

What distinguishes the Breitbrunn Kirchweih culinarily from other village Kirchweihen are two dishes that have been served for generations in Lower Franconian sports and shooting club kitchens:

  • Bocksbraten: Goat meat roast with dumplings and sauerkraut – a hearty traditional dish that is rarely cooked in Lower Franconia anymore. In Breitbrunn, it is a Kirchweih specialty.
  • Fischessen: Carp and trout from regional ponds, classically fried or served as Blauer Karpfen (blue carp).

Accompanied by Franconian beer from the Hassberge breweries and Franconian wine from the region (Steigerwald and Mainfranken are nearby).

Program of a Franconian Kirchweih

The Kirchweih follows the classic four-day Lower Franconian schedule: Thursday Bocksbraten evening; Friday dance evening with a Franconian dance band; Saturday grand festival evening; Sunday festive church service, Frühshoppen, and Kärwa program; Monday Fischessen and festival conclusion. Tradition dictates that the erection of the Kärwabaum (Kirchweih pole) by the village youths is also part of the festivities.

Breitbrunn and the Haßberge

Breitbrunn is located in the Haßberge Nature Park between Hassfurt and Ebern. The St. Matthew's Church and the former school are the most important buildings in the village. In 2023, the municipality celebrated the 900th anniversary of its first documented mention with "900 Years of Breitbrunn" – an indication of the deep roots of the Kirchweih tradition in the town.

Kirchweih Breitbrunn — edition 2026

The Kirchweih Breitbrunn 2026 is expected from September 24th to 28th, based on tradition (Thursday to Monday around September 25th). VfR Hermannsberg-Breitbrunn organizes the Kärwa in the Breitbrunn sports hall with Bocksbraten, Fischessen, and dance evenings.

Program 2026

The exact dates for 2026 have not yet been officially published at the time of research – they are typically announced by VfR Hermannsberg-Breitbrunn and the Ebelsbach administrative community in the summer on the municipality's event page. Based on many years of tradition (Thursday to Monday around September 25th), the festival weekend is expected from September 24th to 28th, 2026.

As in previous years, the program includes the Bocksbraten evening to kick off, a dance evening with a Franconian dance band, the Sunday festive church service and Frühshoppen, and the traditional Fischessen to conclude on Monday.
