Half-timbering, merriment, and Franconian wine in the Hassberg foothills
The Altstadtweinfest Zeil am Main bears the subtitle "Half-timbering, merriment, and Franconian wine" – the program in three words. The setting is the historic market square with its distinctive town hall and the surrounding half-timbered alleys, which are among the best-preserved in all of Mainfranken.
Regional vintners from the Franconian wine-growing region serve wine at the stalls – primarily from the Maintal region, where Zeil is located. Classic Franconian grape varieties such as Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Domina, and Spätburgunder are the focus, along with Frizzante, Federweißer (newly pressed wine), and apple wines as alternatives.
To accompany the wine, there are Franconian specialties: Schäufele (pork shoulder), bratwurst, cheese platters, Main fish sandwiches, onion cake. A diverse music program – from brass bands and cover bands to modern acoustic acts – plays at several venues in the old town area. Festive lighting in the evening particularly highlights the half-timbered facades and narrow alleys.
Zeil am Main is a small town with around 5,700 inhabitants in the Haßberge district (Lower Franconia, Bavaria). The town is known for its excellently preserved townscape and for a dark episode in its history: the witch hunts of the 17th century, to which the Hexenturm (Witch Tower) documentation center is dedicated. The Zeiler Käppele, a pilgrimage chapel on a hill above the town, offers a wide view of the Maintal valley.
From the first weekend of August, the wine festival sets the rhythm of the town center. The market square, main street, and side alleys become the stage for wine stalls, music stages, and food offerings. The illumination of the half-timbered facades makes the evenings particularly atmospheric.
As every year, wineries from the immediate Mainfranken wine region participate. The selection ranges from dry Silvaners to sweeter Spätlesen and Frizzante. Apple wines, Federweißer (seasonal), and regional sparkling wines are also available.
Free admission to the entire festival grounds. Festival-priced wine glasses with a deposit system. Food and drinks directly at the stalls.
By car: A 70 Schweinfurt–Bayreuth, exit Knetzgau, then B 26 to Zeil. By train: Zeil am Main station on the Bamberg–Schweinfurt line.
Free admission to the entire festival grounds. Payment at the wine and food stalls on site; several stalls accept card payments.
Planning a longer stay? Motorhome pitches and guesthouses are available in town. Hiking trails in the Hassberg foothills and cycling paths along the Maintal valley (Main Cycle Path) are also nearby.
