Kirchweih Traditions in Upper Franconia
Poxdorf is a small municipality in the district of Forchheim, where the Kirchweih tradition is kept alive by the Kerwasburschen Poxdorf e.V. The Kerwa follows the traditional Franconian date: the second weekend after the Assumption of Mary (August 15th).
The Betzentanz
The highlight of the Poxdorf Kerwa is the Betzentanz on Kirchweihmontag. During the "Betzenaustanzen," a dance is performed around the Betzen (the Kirchweih bouquet) according to old custom – a competition where the dancing couple who ends up holding the bouquet when the music stops is crowned the Kerwapaar (festival couple).
Festival Tent and Italian Evening
Throughout the festival days, the festival tent, brass music, and Franconian delicacies ensure a convivial atmosphere. A special feature of the Poxdorf Kerwa is the Italian evening, which adds its own popular touch to the village festival.
Village Festival for the Region
For four days, Poxdorf is an attraction for visitors from surrounding towns. The family-friendly atmosphere and the living traditions make the Kerwa a fixed date in the Franconian Kirchweih calendar.
Kerwa Poxdorf — edition 2026
The 2026 edition of the Kerwa Poxdorf follows the traditional date on the second weekend after August 15th and is scheduled for August 13th to 16th, 2026. The organizers are the Kerwasburschen Poxdorf e.V.
As every year, the raising of the Kirchweihbaum, the festival tent operations with brass music, the Italian evening, and the Betzentanz on Kirchweihmontag are the highlights. The exact program will be announced by the Kerwasburschen before the festival.

Getting There
Poxdorf is located in the district of Forchheim, conveniently close to the A73 motorway (exit Forchheim-Nord) between Forchheim and Erlangen. Arrival by car is recommended.
Admission
Admission is free. Food and drinks in the festival tent are subject to a charge.
Tip
The Betzentanz on Kirchweihmontag is the traditional highlight – if you want to experience it, you should be there in the afternoon/evening.
