A summer evening full of light and music in the historic old town
Alsfeld, in the Vogelsberg district of Hesse, is one of the best-preserved half-timbered towns in Germany. The old town was preserved almost intact after 1944 and is now on the UNESCO "Model City List". The central market square with the famous town hall from 1512 and the surrounding half-timbered houses is one of the most famous architectural ensembles in Central Europe. It is precisely this backdrop that makes the Altstadt Open Air 2026 a special experience.
Instead of a classic city festival with a main stage, the Altstadt Open Air 2026 relies on a distributed festival concept. Six different venues in the old town will be used, each with its own color palette and lighting design. The idea: visitors follow the lights and discover the old town as a musical experience trail. Each venue has its own character and musical genre.
On the central market square, the "Vereinsarena" will feature the bands FullDays (from Fulda) and T-Zone, both playing pop and chart hits. At the Grabbrunnen, the band Halb6 will perform – with music in the Hessian dialect. In the Klostergarten, "Rock im Klostergarten" will unfold, a special project with experienced musicians from radio and TV studios. At the Mainzer Tor, an event bus will be set up where DJ Milo will play hits. The Mainzer Gasse will become the club zone with cocktails and DJ Nize T from Planet Radio. A party tent atmosphere will be created on the Kirchplatz.
Local clubs and restaurants will provide catering: the sports club SV 06 Alsfeld, the Volunteer Fire Department Alsfeld, and local restaurateurs. Apple wine, beer, and regional dishes are the focus, complemented by cocktail areas on Mainzer Gasse. The distribution of catering throughout the old town supports movement between the venues.
Unlike most German city festivals, which span several days, the Altstadt Open Air concentrates on a single Saturday evening. This concentration ensures maximum density: the city fills with thousands of visitors in one evening, the program is spread over a few hours, and the atmosphere becomes intense. Those who want to visit all six venues should plan for a marathon evening – those who prefer to listen more relaxed can choose their favorite location.
The Altstadt Open Air replaces the former Alsfeld city festival and sees itself as a contemporary variation: similarly communal, but with a modern atmosphere, an ambitious stage concept, and more intense lighting design. Those who know Alsfeld will experience the familiar city in a new light – literally.
The 2026 edition marks a restart of the Alsfeld city festival in an ambitious format. "Follow the Lights" is a novel concept that turns the medieval old town into a festival stage while simultaneously staging the historical substance.
