Traditional Upper Bavarian Volksfest at the Festplatz Bayernstraße
The Kaufering Volksfest has been celebrated as a four-day town and folk festival on the festival grounds at Bayernstraße since the early 1990s. The market town of Kaufering is the organizer. The 30th edition was celebrated in 2023, followed by the 33rd Volksfest in 2024 – an important anchor of identity for the 11,000-inhabitant community on the Lech river, southwest of Augsburg in the district of Landsberg am Lech, Bavaria.
The Volksfest traditionally opens on Thursday evening with the festival parade of the Kaufering brass band from the town hall to the festival grounds. Afterwards, the 1st Mayor Thomas Salzberger taps the first keg on the stage in the beer tent with the traditional cry "O'zapft is".
Upper Bavarian festival beer is served in the beer tent; the festival hosts – most recently Jochen Mörz and Magnus Ostenrieder – focus on Bavarian delicacies: pork knuckles (Schweinshax'n), grilled trout (Steckerlfisch), half chickens (Hendl), Obatzda cheese spread, and pretzels (Brezn). On the festival grounds, carousels, a boat swing, dodgems, and shooting galleries invite you to enjoy the Volksfest fun.
The Kaufering Volksfest looks back on over three decades. After pandemic-related breaks and the cancellation of the 32nd edition due to Corona, the comeback was celebrated in 2023 (30th Volksfest), followed by the 33rd Volksfest from September 6th to 9th, 2024. The Volksfest had to be cancelled in 2025 due to a lack of viable economic conditions despite intensive negotiations. The Volksfest is planned again for 2026.
Kaufering is located on the Lech river, just 7 kilometers north of Landsberg am Lech and 50 kilometers west of Munich. The festival grounds on Bayernstraße are within walking distance of Kaufering train station (S-Bahn line S2 from Munich). Those who combine their Volksfest visit with sightseeing will find one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Bavaria in Landsberg am Lech.
The Kaufering Volksfest 2026 is planned from August 31 to September 3, 2026, at the Festplatz Bayernstraße. Following the disappointing cancellation in 2025, the market town of Kaufering is striving to return the traditional festival to its former glory.
The opening will traditionally take place on Thursday evening with a concert and festival parade by the Kaufering brass band, followed by the ceremonial beer tapping by the 1st Mayor. The complete program of stage events and hosts will be published on kaufering.de and mein-kaufering.de approximately four weeks before the festival begins.
