Berlin's most beautiful Christmas market between the French and German Domes
For many, Gendarmenmarkt is the most beautiful square in Berlin – framed by the German Dome, the French Dome, and the classicist Konzerthaus (designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel). When the around 200 white, pointed-roof stalls of the WeihnachtsZauber fill the square in late November and the three buildings are illuminated, a backdrop is created that is ranked among the ten most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe by international travel magazines every year.
Three aspects distinguish the market from the typical Berlin mulled wine hustle:
Around 800,000 visitors pass through the WeihnachtsZauber each year – making it Berlin's most visited Christmas market. Tourists from Asia, North America, and Western Europe form a large part of the audience; but Berliners also come specifically for the stage shows. Part of the admission fees supports social and cultural institutions in the city – the market sees itself not as a commercial, but as a city event.
Gendarmenmarkt is located in the Mitte district and borough, a five-minute walk from the Brandenburg Gate and three minutes from Friedrichstraße. Those planning a classic Berlin Christmas day might start at the Brandenburg Gate, walk through Unter den Linden to Gendarmenmarkt, and then enjoy a stroll to Schloss Bellevue or the Christkindlmarkt at Charlottenburg Palace.
The official 2026 edition runs from November 23rd to December 31st, 2026 on Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin-Mitte. The event operator is WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt Berlin GmbH, which has been organizing the market in this form for years.
Around 800,000 visitors are expected again in 2026. Admission fees remain moderate (approx. €2), and the market is free to enter Monday to Friday between 11 AM and 2 PM. Part of the proceeds will be distributed to social and cultural institutions in Berlin, as is traditional.
Admission approx. €2 per person. Free admission Mon–Fri 11 AM–2 PM. All stalls accept direct payment, card and cash mixed. Mulled wine cup deposit (usually €3–€5).
U2 Hausvogteiplatz (3 min walk), U2/U6 Stadtmitte (5 min walk), U5/U6 Unter den Linden (5 min walk). Several bus lines stop at the market. Not recommended by car – parking garages are expensive and full.
Around €2 per person; free admission Monday to Friday between 11 AM and 2 PM. Shortened opening hours and special regulations on December 24th and December 31st.
Sun–Thu 12 PM–10 PM, Fri–Sat 12 PM–11 PM (exact dates announced each October).
Very popular – crowded on Advent weekends, significantly more relaxed on weekdays from 5 PM. Heated covered restaurant area with tables, no cloakroom, toilets require payment (€1).
