About WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt

The WeihnachtsZauber (Christmas Magic) on Gendarmenmarkt is one of Germany's most famous Christmas markets – and for many visitors, it's simply the most beautiful in Berlin. More than 800,000 guests per year crowd between the German Dome, the French Dome, and the Konzerthaus from late November until New Year's Eve to experience arts and crafts, mulled wine, and an international stage program of music, dance, and acrobatics. Unlike most Berlin Christmas markets, there is an admission fee (around €2, free Monday–Friday mornings) – part of the revenue goes to social and cultural institutions in the capital.

Berlin's most beautiful square in winter attire

For many, Gendarmenmarkt is the most beautiful square in Berlin – framed by the German Dome, the French Dome, and the classicist Konzerthaus (designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel). When the around 200 white, pointed-roof stalls of the WeihnachtsZauber fill the square in late November and the three buildings are illuminated, a backdrop is created that is ranked among the ten most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe by international travel magazines every year.

What makes the WeihnachtsZauber special

Three aspects distinguish the market from the typical Berlin mulled wine hustle:

  • Curated arts and crafts: Wood sculptors, comb makers, tailors, and glassblowers demonstrate their work live in a large tent. Only handmade candles, toys, nativity figures, and decorative items are sold.
  • Stage program: daily performances by international acts – dance, acrobatics, choirs, jazz, and world music ensembles. Not background noise, but a programmed festival format.
  • Heated restaurant area: unlike most markets, there is a covered, heated tent gastronomy with tables and table service – Berlin specialties and international dishes.

Tradition and reach

Around 800,000 visitors pass through the WeihnachtsZauber each year – making it Berlin's most visited Christmas market. Tourists from Asia, North America, and Western Europe form a large part of the audience; but Berliners also come specifically for the stage shows. Part of the admission fees supports social and cultural institutions in the city – the market sees itself not as a commercial, but as a city event.

Mitte and surroundings

Gendarmenmarkt is located in the Mitte district and borough, a five-minute walk from the Brandenburg Gate and three minutes from Friedrichstraße. Those planning a classic Berlin Christmas day might start at the Brandenburg Gate, walk through Unter den Linden to Gendarmenmarkt, and then enjoy a stroll to Schloss Bellevue or the Christkindlmarkt at Charlottenburg Palace.
