Harvest your own potatoes at Berlin's last farm
Domäne Dahlem is one of Berlin's most unusual addresses: a historic country estate dating back to the 12th century with a manor house, stables, and fields — all in the middle of the city, three subway stops from the Free University campus. Today, the Domäne is an open-air museum with active agriculture: organic farming, animal husbandry, a farm shop, and events related to the rural history of Berlin-Brandenburg. The Potato Festival is the most popular annual event.
The concept is unusually clear: no potato acrobatics, no French fry Olympics, but real harvest participation. In the fields, visitors can pull organic potatoes out of the ground with hand sieves — and keep what they harvest. Those who don't have a bag with them get one. Those who want to cook on-site can roast their harvest at the Potato Bonfire in the Hofesche — an open campfire where residents from all over southern Berlin roast their tubers.
Dahlem is the district where Berlin concentrates its scientific hub: Free University, several Max Planck Institutes, Botanical Garden, Ethnological Museum. This is precisely where the city's last farm is located — a contrast that defines Dahlem. The Potato Festival connects these two worlds: the science district and the agricultural heritage, families from the Zehlendorf villa district, and city visitors from all over Berlin.
On the weekend of September 19/20, 2026, Domäne Dahlem opens its gates for the annual Potato Festival. In the fields of the historic country estate, visitors can personally harvest organic potatoes with hand sieves and take them home, or roast them on-site at the open potato bonfire. The depot barn showcases historical agricultural machines from three centuries of Brandenburg's agricultural history. A musical accompanying program, craft stalls, an exhibition on the history of the potato in Prussia, and a family program round off the festival. Steglitz-Zehlendorf district, direct U-Bahn connection right in front of the entrance.
The complete 2026 program will be published on domaene-dahlem.de as well as on berlin.de before the festival. Key points:
