Carnival in Münster-Amelsbüren — Tradition with Emmerbach Spirit

Amelsbüren, with around 6,700 inhabitants, is the southernmost district of the city of Münster, bordering the Coesfeld district. Despite belonging to Münster, Amelsbüren retains a distinctly village character to this day — farms, club life, vibrant traditional customs. In carnival terms, this means an independent carnival that has little in common with the large-scale Münster city events and instead targets the families of the district as its main audience.

When: Sunday, February 15, 2026 — Start 2:11 PM

The main event day is Tulip Sunday, February 15, 2026, with the classic carnival time: 2:11 PM. Due to road closures (1:30 PM to 2:00 AM on Davertstraße, Ottmarsbocholter Straße, and surrounding areas), Amelsbüren will be car-free on the afternoon of the parade.

The AKG Emmerbachgeister

The organizer is the Amelsbürener Karnevalsgesellschaft AKG Emmerbachgeister e.V. The name refers to the Emmerbach, a small stream flowing through Amelsbüren, which adds to the village charm and identity. The AKG organizes the entire Amelsbüren carnival program — seated carnival events, children's carnival, family parade, and after-party are part of the fixed annual cycle.

The Carnival Parade — Family Format

The Amelsbüren parade is designed as a family format. The main target audience is families with children from the district and surrounding villages (Mecklenbeck, Hiltrup, Ottmarsbocholt). The parade is characterized by:

• Decorated floats from the district and the region
• Walking groups with themed costumes
• Music bands and drum corps
• Dance groups from the carnival club
• Plenty of Kamelle (sweets) and Strüssjen (small bouquets) for the children

Over-18s Carnival Party in the Festival Tent

After the parade, the festival tent at Lailly-en-Val-Platz transforms into a carnival party for ages 18 and over. Lailly-en-Val is Amelsbüren's French partner municipality — the square's name commemorates the town twinning that has existed for decades. The over-18s party features DJ sets, live carnival hits, Kölsch and Pils beer in the festival tent. Tickets via the AKG online ticketing system.

Getting There and Safety

By bus: Lines from Münster ZOB towards Hiltrup/Amelsbüren. By car: A1 exit Münster-Süd. Due to road closures from 1:30 PM, residents should park their vehicles elsewhere beforehand; visitors should best park on the outskirts and walk to the festival grounds. Carnival in Münsterland

Münsterland is not traditionally perceived as a Rhenish carnival stronghold — the major carnival cities are further south (Cologne, Düsseldorf, Bonn, Mainz). This makes traditional formats like Amelsbüren's all the more important: they show that carnival is alive and well in the predominantly Catholic and rural Münsterland — albeit in a smaller, family-centered, village form.
