Atmospheric Advent market in the Kaamp-Hüs — on the most prominent island in the North Sea
Kampen on Sylt is famous for its thatched-roof houses, its red cliffs, and the fact that it has been considered the most sophisticated place on the island since the 1950s — a meeting point for German artists, writers, and industrialists. With only around 500 inhabitants, it remains a quiet village. In winter, when most summer tourists have left the island, a special tranquility sets in — and it is precisely into this tranquility that the Christmas market falls.
The venue is the Kaamp-Hüs at Hauptstraße 12 — one of the most beautiful and interesting event houses on the island: a historic thatched-roof estate with traditional Sylt architecture, which hosts exhibitions, readings, and concerts in the summer. During Advent, the entire house transforms into a Christmas market: stalls inside with arts and crafts, jewelry, local food products, and a Christmas village outside with huts, fir trees, and fairy lights.
The Sylt Advent market tradition has its own specialties: Glühwein (mulled wine) from regional wineries, punch with Friesengeist, kale soup from North German tradition, and Futjes — the round yeast balls with raisins that are as much a part of Christmas on the island as stollen is elsewhere.
The Kampen Christmas market is part of a whole series of Sylt Christmas markets, which runs from the end of November to the beginning of January: Sylt Winter Market in Westerland (continuous), Sturmhaube's Winter Magic in Wenningstedt, List Christmas Market, Keitum Barn Market, Hörnum Christmas Market. Those who make a multi-day Advent visit to the island typically combine them.
As every year, the Kaamp-Hüs on Hauptstraße 12 will transform into a Christmas market on the second weekend of Advent: stalls inside the historic thatched-roof house, and a Christmas village outside with huts, a mulled wine bar, and food stalls.
The detailed program — performances by the Sylt Shanty Choir, the Kampen school, Low German readings — is traditionally published in the second half of November on the Sylt-TV events page and the municipal website.
Detailed program and special concerts will be published shortly before the date on sylt-tv.com.
