Four-week music festival on the Oberburg Giebichenstein in Halle (Saale)
Trotzburgfest is the answer that Halle-based promoter Michael Proschek found in the summer of 2020 in response to the Corona pandemic. At the time, the city museum asked if he could organize some concerts — what emerged was a four-week music festival that has taken place every summer since on the Oberburg Giebichenstein above the Saale. It has now reached its 7th edition and has long been an institution in Halle's concert scene.
The name says it all: Born out of a defiant reaction against the pandemic, the festival has retained a style that is deliberately unconventional. No headliner posters, no genre definitions, no mass production. Instead, Proschek curates around 18 concerts per edition, spanning the musical universe — Indie and German Rock meet Bluegrass and Reggae, Swing meets Acapella Jazz, Acoustic Songwriters share the lineup with Finnish Tango bands or Brazilian female folklorists.
The Oberburg Giebichenstein sits enthroned on a porphyry rock on the western bank of the Saale and is one of the oldest preserved castle complexes in Central Germany. Over 1000 years of history, from the royal palace of Henry IV to the bishop's residence, make the backdrop particularly special. The concert area in the castle courtyard can only accommodate a few hundred visitors — deliberately manageable to preserve the festival's character. The Saale flows 100 meters below, and from the castle wall, the view extends over Halle (Saale) and the hills of the Saale meadows.
Trotzburgfest is one of the festivals that shape Halle as a city of culture — alongside the Handel Festival, the Lantern Festival, the Werkleitz Biennale, and the Festival of Lights. In the state of Saxony-Anhalt, it stands for an intimate, highly curated form of festival that focuses more on musical diversity than on volume. Anyone who falls in love with Halle and its castle has found their summer festival here.
In the summer of 2026, the 7th edition of Trotzburgfest will run from June 5th to 28th — for four weekends, always from Tuesday to Sunday, starting around 8 PM each evening on the Oberburg Giebichenstein above the Saale. 18 concerts are scheduled, ranging from local student bands to international folk stars. A large portion of the tickets will be available for individual sale; the limited season ticket grants access to all evenings.
Promoter Michael Proschek has once again curated a wide selection of genres: Dub & Reggae meet Acapella Jazz, Finnish Tango meets Brazilian Folklore, Bluegrass meets German Rock. The intimate atmosphere remains characteristic — only a few hundred seats per evening, open-air concerts with a view of Halle (Saale).
