Traditional Ascension Day market at the Frauenstein castle ruins in the Silbermann town
As Christi Himmelfahrt (Ascension Day) approaches, the people of Osterzgebirge look forward to one of their most beautiful traditions: the Jahrmarkt in Frauenstein. The setting is extraordinary — the Frauenstein castle ruins, one of the most impressive architectural monuments in the Osterzgebirge, majestically towers over the small town. Dealers and showmen set up their stalls on the castle hill and surrounding squares — a magnet for visitors from all over the Erzgebirge for generations.
The market combines several worlds: On one hand, classic market vendors offering food, regional specialties (Pulsnitzer Pfefferkuchen, Saxon sausages), tools, textiles, and household goods. On the other hand, a lively antique and flea market — a mix of real treasures and charming knick-knacks. Plus, showmen with small rides for children, bratwurst stands, mulled wine and drink stands, and everywhere the typical smell of charcoal and candied almonds.
The musical program is modest but fitting: In the morning (10:00 AM — 12:00 PM), a brass band from the volunteer fire department performs — traditional folk music, Erzgebirge songs, cheerful background music for market strolls. In the afternoon (1:00 PM — 3:00 PM), a live duo takes over with country, blues, and rock — a different mood, more convivial.
A nice special feature: On Ascension Day — actually a public holiday, normally closed — the shops around Frauenstein's market square open from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. This allows local retailers to benefit from the market traffic. A rare opportunity for visitors to explore the small retail world of the Silbermann town.
The town of Frauenstein, with around 3,000 inhabitants, is located in the district of Mittelsachsen in the Osterzgebirge, directly on the Czech border. It is famous as the Silbermann town: the world-renowned organ builder Gottfried Silbermann (1683–1753) was born here, and the Silbermann Museum in the town honors his life's work. The imposing Frauenstein castle ruins date back to the 12th century and are among the largest castle ruins in Saxony. Visitors to the market should definitely plan a walk through the castle grounds and a short visit to the Silbermann Museum.
The Frauenstein market 2026 falls on Thursday, May 14 — Ascension Day. As is traditional, dealers and showmen start at 10:00 AM; many set up their stalls from 8:00 AM. The market remains open until late afternoon, with live music accompanying market visitors in the morning and afternoon.
A beautiful tradition continues: the shops on the market square open their doors on Ascension Day from 1 PM to 5 PM — a special permit specifically for the market, offering visitors a rare opportunity to get to know the retail side of the Silbermann town.
