Itzehoe and the Stör
Itzehoe, with just under 32,000 inhabitants, is the district town of Steinburg, located in southern Schleswig-Holstein between Hamburg and Heide. The town lies on the Stör, a tributary of the Elbe — which gives the run its name. The Stör meanders from Itzehoe through the flat Schleswig-Holstein marshland and shapes the landscape. Participants in the Störlauf run through the town, marshland, and small Geest villages like Münsterdorf, along the water, and under avenues of poplar trees.
An Established Event
The Itzehoer Störlauf will celebrate its 26th edition in 2026. The organizer is Sport-Club Itzehoe (SC Itzehoe), one of the largest sports clubs in West Schleswig-Holstein. The DLV approval means that the courses are officially measured and personal best times are counted for national rankings — an important factor, especially for ambitious amateur runners.
Courses and Format
Six distances plus two walking routes make the Störlauf an inclusive run for the whole family:
- 400 meters without timekeeping (for toddlers)
- 2 km (schoolchildren, youth)
- 5 km (hobby and junior runners)
- 10 km (classic fun run course)
- Half Marathon (21.1 km)
- Walking 5 km and 10 km
Topography and Atmosphere
The courses are largely flat — the Schleswig-Holstein marshland doesn't offer much elevation. This makes the Störlauf a fast course where personal bests are possible. The atmosphere is family-friendly and sporty — Itzehoe is a sports town with an active club scene, and this is reflected in the spectators.
