Munich's Largest Free Street Festival
When the Isar becomes a promenade one September weekend, the Isarinselfest is back on the agenda. Supported by Munich associations and organizations, the festival is one of the largest free cultural events in Bavaria's state capital – and one of the few that belongs to the residents of Munich's city center, not to major sponsors. The supporting body is the non-profit Isarinselfestverein e.V., originally initiated by Munich associations, organizations, and social groups.
Four Stages, One Promenade
The venue is Steinsdorfstraße, which becomes a pedestrian zone for three days. The program is spread across four stages, each with its own character:
- Praterinsel Stage — Main stage with Munich rock, pop, and folk bands
- Arabella Stage — Radio stage with cover bands and mainstream acts
- Brett'l Stage — Cabaret, comedy, singer-songwriters, magic
- PlatzDa! Youth Stage — Emerging bands and young artists
In addition, walking acts and street performers entertain the crowds across the festival grounds, while a dedicated children's program with clowns, face painting, and interactive activities unfolds under the trees along Steinsdorfstraße.
Drone Show and Isarstrand
For several years now, the highlight has been the drone show on Saturday evening, transforming the sky above the Isar into a colorful spectacle. With the Urbanauten and their Isarstrand at the Vater-Rhein-Brunnen, a cozy lounge area by the water is also added.
Social Profile and Self-Understanding
The Isarinselfest sees itself as a solidarity-based neighborhood festival: Munich initiatives, AWO, SPD Munich, and numerous social projects present themselves at stalls, with proceeds going to charitable work. The festival is free – and precisely for this reason, it has been one of the most democratic cultural events in the city of Munich in Bavaria for years.
