The largest festival for Indian cinema in Europe
The Indian Film Festival Stuttgart, founded in 2004 by Filmbüro Baden-Württemberg, has since developed into the largest festival for Indian cinema in Europe. For four days, it showcases feature films, documentaries, short films, and mainstream productions from all linguistic regions of India – from Hindi Bollywood productions to Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Malayalam, and Bengali films. The parallel program of diaspora filmmakers in Europe, North America, and Great Britain is also regularly featured.
The 23rd edition in 2026 runs for four days from Thursday, July 23, to Sunday, July 26, in Stuttgart's city center cinemas. Screenings will take place at EM/CINEMA at Königstraße 22 (corner of Bolzstraße 4) and the neighboring GLORIA at Königstraße 20 – both are among the most traditional cinemas in Stuttgart's city center.
The festival is organized into several sections: Feature Film Competition, Documentary Competition, Short Film Competition, and a Newcomer Section for debut works. A dedicated section is regularly devoted to diaspora films – productions by directors of Indian origin in Europe and North America.
Several prizes with cash awards are presented at the festival: the "German Star of India" as the main prize in the feature film competition (EUR 10,000), the Documentary Film Prize, the Director's Vision Award, and the Audience Award. The jury consists of German and international film professionals; the Audience Award is decided by the public.
The organizer is Filmbüro Baden-Württemberg, which maintains a year-round support structure for independent film culture in Stuttgart. In addition to the Indian Film Festival, it organizes the Festival of Animation and supports numerous regional film projects. The City of Stuttgart and the State of Baden-Württemberg are important institutional partners.
In 2026, the Indian Film Festival Stuttgart takes place for the 23rd time. Organizer Filmbüro Baden-Württemberg programs around 25 feature films, 10 documentaries, and several short film blocks over four days from all linguistic regions of the Indian subcontinent — as well as from the diaspora.
Screenings will be held in the traditional cinemas EM/CINEMA and GLORIA on Stuttgart's Königstraße. Both venues are classic cinemas with large auditoriums and good sound technology — ideal for the opulently staged Indian productions.
