AQUAnostra Water Festival Bad Doberan

Water as a Guiding Theme

The AQUAnostra Water Festival is part of a multi-part water initiative in Bad Doberan and Heiligendamm. The organizers are the Doberan associations, partners, and the City of Bad Doberan; the program is coordinated by the Bad Doberan-Heiligendamm Tourist Information. The festival weekend is integrated into the overarching program of the AQUAnostra Water Week (mid-June).

Multidisciplinary Program

The program includes concerts at various venues, exhibitions on the significance of water in art and history, films on water culture and the environment, theater, readings, as well as guided hikes to the Klostersee, the Zisterziensermühle, and the Baltic Sea resort of Heiligendamm. The weekend often combines with the Monastery Market weekend on the grounds of the Doberan Minster.

Water in Bad Doberan

Bad Doberan has a special water history: the medieval water power of the Zisterziensermühle, the spa and drinking culture of Heiligendamm (founded in 1793 as the first German seaside resort), and the scenic connection between Klostersee, the forest, and the Baltic Sea coast. The Water Festival makes these diverse connections to the element of water visible.

Regional Context

Bad Doberan is located in the Rostock district (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) and is directly connected to the Baltic Sea via Heiligendamm. The combination of monastery, spa town, and coastal town makes the city a culturally and historically rich region. The AQUAnostra Water Festival is part of an annual summer format that bundles the local wealth of water stories.
