Maritime Market on the Inner Harbour — March to September
The Husumer Binnenhafen is the historic heart of the city — a picturesque harbour basin from the 17th century that earned Husum the nickname "the grey city by the sea" (Theodor Storm). Framed by the Speicher Husum (Husum Granary), the harbour has been a hub for trade and fishing for centuries — and today is one of Schleswig-Holstein's most defining backdrops.
Every third Sunday of the month from March to September, the inner harbour transforms into a maritime market mile. Direct marketers and craftspeople from North Frisia set up their stalls on Kleikuhle and Hafenstraße — both located directly on the water. The offerings are diverse:
The market atmosphere at the harbour is different from city centre markets — here, the proximity to the water, the seagulls, the old granary buildings, and the maritime character of the stalls shape the experience. Historic ships and cutters often lie in the harbour basin, complementing the scene.
The market takes place every Sunday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The provisional dates for 2026 (third Sunday of each month):
Husum is the district town of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein and, with around 23,000 inhabitants, is the economic and cultural centre of the region. The harbour market in the Süderhafen/Hafen district is part of the city's year-round event programme and complements prominent Husum markets such as the Husumer Krabbentag (Husum Shrimp Day) and the Husumer Hafentage (Husum Harbour Days).
From the season opening on March 15th to the season finale on September 20th, 2026, the Husumer Hafenmarkt will take place a total of seven times — always on the third Sunday of the month. The format has been established for years and is coordinated by Husum Tourism.
The market atmosphere changes throughout the season: In March and April, it's about the first direct marketer specialties, in June and July, with the fresh shrimp fishing season, a maritime midsummer atmosphere is added, and in September, the season concludes with autumnal offerings.
