Concept of the Museum Night
Once a year, the Emden Museum Night opens all the city's important cultural institutions with free admission and a special programme curated specifically for the evening. Special guided tours, concerts in exhibition rooms, workshops with artists, film screenings, and performance contributions complement the regular exhibition offerings. The event is intended as an accessible introductory offer, aiming to attract people who might not visit museums regularly.
Participating Venues 2026
The focus is on the Kunsthalle Emden, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2026 with an extensive programme. In addition, the Ostfriesisches Landesmuseum, recipient of the prestigious German Museum Prize 2026, and other institutions such as the Bunker-Museum, the Johannes a Lasco Library, and the Pelzerhaus 11 will participate. Motto "Sternstunden"
The motto for 2026 is "Sternstunden" (Star Moments), connecting the idea of outstanding moments from each institution with the nocturnal character of the event. Programme items will relate to special exhibitions, collection highlights, and curatorial focuses of the year.
Integrated into a Festival Weekend
The Museum Night takes place concurrently with the three-day culinary festival Emden à la Carte (August 7-9, 2026) on the Neuen Markt. Together, both events form an attractive city weekend with culinary and cultural highlights. Day visitors from the region and overnight guests often combine the programme for a short break in Emden.
Emden Museum Night — edition 2026
The 2026 Museum Night coincides with the anniversary year of the Kunsthalle Emden, which has been one of Northern Germany's most important private art museums since its founding in 1986. The Ostfriesisches Landesmuseum celebrates its award with the German Museum Prize in 2026 – one of the most significant recognitions for museum work in Germany.
