Hildesheim's spring festival celebrating beer, street food, and regional delicacies
Since its premiere, Hopfen & Happen has become a season opener for the culinary spring season in Hildesheim. With its ninth edition from April 10th to 12th, 2026, the Schmeckfest continues its success story. Hildesheim Marketing GmbH conceptualizes the format together with gastronomic partners and each year curates a mix of established regional breweries, young craft beer brewers, street food specialists, and producers from the Hildesheim region.
The focus on beer distinguishes Hopfen & Happen from classic street food festivals. Bavarian and North German breweries, craft beer manufacturers, and regional suppliers from Lower Saxony serve a wide range of beers from Pils, Helles, and Weizen to Pale Ale, Stout, Bock, and seasonal specialties. Tastings and conversations with the brewery teams are part of the experience, as are beer workshops and short lectures on hops, malt, and brewing tradition.
The beer offerings are complemented by a diverse street food area: from grilled burger specialties and pulled pork sandwiches to Asian bao buns, wraps, vegan bowls, and sweet treats like donuts, crêpes, and ice cream. The selection is further enhanced by a delicacy market featuring sausages, cheeses, mustards, jams, honey, and baked goods from the Hildesheim region.
Hopfen & Happen utilizes the central squares and streets of Hildesheim's city center as the event area. The Market Square with the Knochenhauer Guild House, the Platz An der Lilie, and adjacent areas form a walkable festival mile where visitors can leisurely move from stall to stall. Musical accents on various stages provide the fitting atmosphere.
For many residents of Hildesheim, the Schmeckfest marks the true beginning of spring: the outdoor areas of the city center fill up again, and the convivial gathering over beer, food, and music is among the first warm impressions of the year. Guests from Hanover, Göttingen, and the surrounding areas of Lower Saxony also travel for the weekend, so Hopfen & Happen resonates far beyond the city limits.
Hopfen & Happen 2026 builds on the proven concept of previous years and expands the offerings to include more breweries from Northern Germany and selected street food concepts. The focus is on quality, variety, and a close connection to the regional producer scene.
The weekend is accompanied by beer workshops, brewery talks, and small musical contributions at the various stage points in the city center. Those who want to learn more about hop varieties, brewing processes, or the history of beer in Lower Saxony can talk directly with the brewers.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
