About Sun Down Wine Pop Up
Weinsalon Rheinhessen is one of the most distinguished young addresses for wine in Mainz. The concept behind it is a curated selection of Rheinhessen wines — from established wineries to young newcomers, from classic varietal wines to Pet-Nats and experimental natural wines — combined with a sophisticated lounge area, regular tastings, and after-work formats.
The summer series Sun Down Wine Pop Up leaves its permanent location and moves the concept up to the bastions of the Mainz Citadel, specifically to the Kulturei, a venue within the fortress complex that has been carefully reactivated in recent years. Here, sightlines open up over Mainz, the Rhine, and the Rheinhessen hills — a backdrop that immediately fulfills the format's Mediterranean promise.
The offering combines open wine tasting with a relaxed lounge atmosphere. The participating wineries change depending on the date; typically, six to ten estates are present, each with a selection of white, rosé, and suitable red wines. This is complemented by a gastronomic offering with tapas, sharing plates, and vegetarian options. Musically, the spectrum ranges from DJ sets in the house and disco genres to acoustic concerts.
The series is aimed at an urban audience from Mainz and Wiesbaden who appreciate the aperitif character of a Mediterranean summer evening — wine as the soundtrack to the end of the workday, without the stiff framework of classic tastings. Three dates per year, each unique due to the respective season.
Sun Down Wine Pop Up — edition 2026
Each of the three pop-up evenings follows a consistent structure: opening at 5 PM with aperitif ambiance, climax around sunset, relaxed winding down until 10 PM. The selection of participating wineries and the 2026 music program will be communicated by Weinsalon Rheinhessen in due course. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: a mix of established Mainz and Rheinhessen wineries with young natural wine projects, a DJ set or acoustic concert focusing on house, disco, or singer-songwriter, and a complementary gastronomic offering with a Mediterranean focus.

Location and Getting There
Kulturei at the Mainz Citadel, Auf der Bastion Drusus, 55131 Mainz. Approximately a 25-minute walk from Mainz Central Station through the city center, or take a bus to near the fortress complex. Parking spaces are very limited; public transport or walking is recommended.

All dates from 5 PM to 10 PM.
Tickets
Admission and tasting packages are available via the Weinsalon Rheinhessen website. Reservations are recommended, as the pop-up evenings are regularly well-attended.
Notes
Outdoor event — please bring weather-appropriate clothing. In case of extreme weather, a substitute or rescheduled date may be possible.
