Maritime Music Revue at the Kleine Komödie Warnemünde
»Holländers Seemannsgarn — The Sea in Opera, Song and Shanty« is a production by Volkstheater Rostock, performed by the musical theatre ensemble at the Kleine Komödie Warnemünde. The evening is designed as a maritime music revue, combining the grand world of opera with the folk melodies of sea shanties into a harmonious and varied program.
The revue spins its thread around the legend of the Flying Dutchman: the captain, who only comes ashore every seven years, seeks a woman who can release him and his crew from their eternal voyage across the seven seas. On this night, the helmsman is allowed to let off steam and spin his sea yarn. This creates a framework for an evening full of emotion, wit, and musical diversity.
Musically, the program combines grand opera arias with atmospheric art songs and rousing shanties. The soloists of the musical theatre bring the sea to life in its most diverse musical facets – from dramatic to cheerful, from artful to folk. The program deeply moves the audience while entertaining them.
The venue is the Kleine Komödie in Warnemünde, the seaside resort and district of Rostock at the mouth of the Warnow River into the Baltic Sea. The stage is small but offers an intimate atmosphere and close proximity to the performers. Thus, the venue is thematically ideally suited for a revue about the sea and seafaring.
With »Holländers Seemannsgarn«, Volkstheater Rostock, the largest theatre in the Rostock district and the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, brings a maritime music program directly to the Baltic Sea coast. The production, premiered in 2025, will be revived in 2026.
In 2026, »Holländers Seemannsgarn — The Sea in Opera, Song and Shanty« will once again be on the repertoire of Volkstheater Rostock. From May 9 to June 14, 2026, the musical theatre ensemble will perform the maritime music revue at the Kleine Komödie Warnemünde.
Centred around the legend of the Flying Dutchman, the soloists combine grand opera arias with atmospheric art songs and rousing shanties. The intimate stage in the Baltic Sea resort of Warnemünde ensures a close connection between performers and audience.
