Dragon Boats in the Heart of Warnemünde

The Warnemünde Dragon Boat Festival takes place every year as part of the Warnemünde Week and is one of its regular highlights. The venue is the Alter Strom, the historic harbour arm in the centre of the Baltic seaside resort. The festival is organised by LT-Club Rostock Breitling.

The Competition

Up to 70 teams compete in the approximately 12.55-metre-long dragon boats with ten or twenty paddlers. Among the teams are former European champions as well as sports clubs and company teams. The races are held over distances of 100 to around 280 metres – short, intense competitions that are excellent to follow from the shore. Catering and an awards ceremony round off the programme.

Local Context

Dragon boat racing originally comes from China and has been firmly established in Rostock for decades. The festival on the Alter Strom combines this tradition with the maritime backdrop of Warnemünde in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is part of the extensive summer programme of the Warnemünde Week.
