A 151-year Spreewald Tradition
Neu Zauche is a small village in the Spreewald, Dahme-Spreewald district, with a strong Wendish-Sorbian tradition. The annual Wendische Fastnacht (Sorbian: Zapust) will celebrate its 151st edition in 2026 — one year after the much-noticed 150th anniversary in 2025.
February 2026 — Expected February 14th–15th
The carnival traditionally takes place on the Saturday and Sunday before Ash Wednesday. For 2026, the date of February 14th/15th is expected — the exact date will be confirmed by the carnival association during the winter.
The Costume Parade — Over 100 Couples in Wendish Costume
The heart of the event is the grand parade through the village: over 100 couples in full Wendish costume (women in multi-layered skirts with lace caps, men in black suits with hats) march through Neu Zauche. They are accompanied by a brass band, the traditional Zampern (begging tour), and a festive float.
Carnival Ball at the 'Zum Oberspreewald' Inn
After the parade, the village heads to the carnival ball at the 'Zum Oberspreewald' inn. Dance bands, regional cuisine, and Spreewald schnapps characterize the evening, which traditionally lasts late into the night.
Significance of the Wendische Fastnacht
The Wendische Fastnacht (Zapust) is one of the most important traditional festivals of the Sorbian-Wendish minority in Lower Lusatia. It marks the transition from winter to spring and has remained an important anchor of identity in the Spreewald. Neu Zauche is considered one of the villages where the customs are particularly vibrantly preserved.
