Traditional Spreewald Christmas Market with Ice Rink on the Market Square
The Lübben Christmas Market is one of Brandenburg's most atmospheric Christmas events. From Friday, November 27th, to Sunday, November 29th, 2026, it transforms the market square of the Spreewald town around the Paul Gerhardt Church into a Christmas meeting place: wooden stalls with handicrafts, stands with regional specialties from the Spreewald (cucumbers in all forms, sourdough bread, Sorbian cookies, Spreewald honey), a central stage with performances by Lübben schools, kindergartens, and choirs — and above all, the ringing of the bells of the medieval church.
The special feature of the Lübben Christmas Market: A 450 m² ice rink is set up on the market square every year — the Stadtwerke Ice Rink Lübben. It opens for the Christmas market's opening on November 27th and remains in operation until January 4th. So, even after the three-day Christmas market ends, you can still go ice skating in the historic town center of Lübben during the pre-Christmas period and the Christmas holidays. A combination that is unparalleled in Brandenburg.
The opening on Friday, November 27th, 2026, is traditionally a small festive event: welcome by the mayor, performance by the famous figure skater Christine Stüber-Errath on the newly built ice rink (Stüber-Errath became World Champion in figure skating in 1974 and is a Brandenburg sports legend), traditional stollen cutting, and lighting of the Advent decorations. The Paul Gerhardt Church will be open throughout the weekend, inviting visitors to concerts and quiet moments.
Lübben is the district town of the Dahme-Spreewald district and is traditionally considered the "Gateway to the Spreewald" — the capital of the unique water landscape where the Spree River divides into hundreds of small waterways. In summer, thousands arrive by punt; in winter, the atmosphere is completely different, quieter — the Christmas market fits perfectly into this season. The town itself, with its castle, castle island, medieval city wall, and Paul Gerhardt Church (named after the famous Lübben poet and theologian, 1607-1676), is an architectural gem.
The Christmas market is organized by the City of Lübben (Spreewald), executed by Nachtflug Eventproduktion and Restaurant La Casa. The market stalls mainly come from the Spreewald and Southern Brandenburg, supplemented by exhibitors from Berlin and Saxony. Children's choirs from Lübben schools, brass ensembles, and live bands take turns on stage. On weekends, there are carousel rides, children's programs, and live music with a DJ on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Come on Friday evening for the opening — the performance by Christine Stüber-Errath, the stollen cutting, and the lighting of the Advent decorations are the most emotional moments of the market. On other days, it's quieter and more child-friendly. Combine your market visit with a walk across the castle island and to Lübben Castle.
