Thanksgiving festival of the Heverbund communities on the Eiderstedt peninsula
The Heverbund is an association of the three small Eiderstedt marsh communities of Osterhever, Westerhever, and Poppenbüll. The three villages are located north of the Eiderstedt peninsula between St. Peter-Ording and Tönning, nestled in the typical Eiderstedt marsh landscape with terpen, sheep dykes, and the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site as neighbours. For years, the associations of the three communities have jointly organised the Heverbunder Erntefest — one of the most important community events in the Heverbund.
The Erntedankfest traditionally takes place at the end of the harvest season — usually on the last weekend of September. It combines the old agricultural tradition of Thanksgiving with the village's need for social interaction. The programme and schedule vary slightly from year to year, but the core remains constant: welcome, communal meal, dance music (often with local bands or DJs), small performances by village associations, and plenty of time for socialising.
Eiderstedt is one of the most characteristic marsh landscapes in Schleswig-Holstein. On the Halligen and terpen, thatched houses, vast fields, sheep, and the Westerhever lighthouse — one of the most photographed landmarks in Northern Germany — define the region. Visitors to the Heverbunder Erntefest often combine it with a walk in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park or a trip to the Westerhever lighthouse.
The three Heverbund communities are located in the district of Nordfriesland and belong to the Eiderstedt office. Osterhever can be reached in a few minutes by car via the L33 from St. Peter-Ording or Tönning. Despite the small population of the communities, the Erntedankfest attracts guests from the surrounding area every year who want to experience authentic Eiderstedt village life.
The Heverbunder Erntefest 2026 continues the long-standing annual rhythm of the three Eiderstedt communities. As in previous years, the evening will be dedicated to Thanksgiving and community spirit — with musical accompaniment, food from regional cuisine, and the typical marsh village conviviality.
The exact programme details for 2026 (start time, musical entertainment, possible tombola, food offerings) will be announced by the Heverbund via the official community pages shortly before the event. In previous years, the event started at 8:00 PM in Osterhever with musical entertainment and food.
The detailed schedule for the Heverbunder Erntefest 2026 will be communicated by the Heverbund via the official websites of Osterhever and the Tourism Association Westerhever-Poppenbüll. Based on previous years, the programme includes: Welcome by the board, musical entertainment (band or DJ), food and drinks, and communal gathering.
Any admission fees and food prices will be announced by the Heverbund shortly before the event.
By car: B5 to Tönning, then via the L33 to Osterhever. By train: Husum (Marschbahn) or St. Peter-Ording (end of the line), then continue by bus or rental car — public transport connections on Eiderstedt are limited outside the main season.
The festival is primarily aimed at the residents of the three Heverbund communities and their association members, but is also open to visiting guests as part of the usual village festival tradition. Detailed information on access and any admission fees will be published by the communities on their websites at short notice.
For those planning an extended weekend, combine the Erntedankfest with an overnight stay in St. Peter-Ording (approx. 15 km west) or Tönning (approx. 12 km southeast).
