Sauerland Advent atmosphere in Herscheid

Herscheid is a small municipality with around 7,200 inhabitants in the Märkischer Kreis, southeast of Lüdenscheid and north of Plettenberg. Located in the heart of the Sauerland, characterized by forests, low mountain range foothills, and a dense network of clubs, Herscheid is anything but a tourist hotspot — and that's precisely what makes the Herscheider Adventsgestöber so authentic. The market is organized by volunteers, is small, personal, and breathes the atmosphere often missing from the large NRW Christmas markets in Cologne, Düsseldorf, or Dortmund.

The "cheerful little Christmas market"

Self-proclaimed motto: "The cheerful little Christmas market". On the Alter Schulplatz in the heart of Herscheid, there are around 50 stalls, run by craftspeople from Herscheid, Plettenberg, Werdohl, Halver, and nearby Lüdenscheid. You will find: woodwork from local workshops, knitwear and felt items, pottery, jewelry, handmade clothing, beeswax candles, honey, natural cosmetics, jams, and preserves. No mass-produced mulled wine hall fare, but genuine manufactories.

Mulled wine, waffles, and live music

For gastronomy, Herscheid clubs provide the market with mulled wine, punch, children's punch, waffles, potato pancakes, bratwurst, cheese, and cake. Prices are typically moderate for a village (mulled wine approx. €3, waffle €2.50). There is live music on a small stage or as wandering performances: brass ensembles, trombone choirs, and acoustic bands provide atmospheric accompaniment. Families will find craft activities, a nativity scene, and a carousel for the little ones.

Biennial — every two years

The Adventsgestöber takes place every two years: 2022, 2024, 2026… The break in between is the reality of volunteer work — organizing with exhibitor acquisition, catering, electricity, stage, security, and setup is a huge effort. Instead of putting on a half-hearted event annually, Spiekus-rockt and Wir für Herscheid e.V. organize something substantial every two years. The wait is worth it — residents of Herscheid, former residents from all over the Sauerland, and families from Lüdenscheid and Plettenberg make the market a full weekend event.

Märkisches Sauerland as an Advent region

The Märkisches Sauerland is not one of Germany's classic Advent magnets — and that's precisely why it's one of the most genuine. If you're looking for the tourist cliché of the light-chain city, head to Cologne or Aachen. If you appreciate village community traditions, personal atmosphere, and regional crafts, head to Herscheid.
