Guided hike to observe cranes during their migration on the island of Ummanz
Ummanz, a small island west of Rügen in the Vorpommern-Rügen district, rightly bears the nickname "Island of Cranes". It lies on the West European flyway of the Common Crane (Grus grus). In autumn, tens of thousands of cranes rest on the Baltic Sea coast, many of them on the fields and meadows of Ummanz, gathering strength for their onward flight to southern wintering grounds.
The most impressive experience is in the evening: at dusk, the cranes gather in large flocks and fly with loud trumpeting to their roosting sites in the shallow waters, for example in Udarser Wiek. A good observation point is near Tankow. Those who have experienced this spectacle once will not forget it quickly.
The "Inselläufer Ummanz" conduct their autumn hike during the crane migration season. On the guided tour, participants learn interesting facts about the cranes, their migration, and the island's landscape. The hike combines outdoor activity with the observation of one of Northern Germany's most spectacular bird phenomena.
In addition to the hike, an exhibition in the Waase Information Centre provides information about cranes and their migration. This allows the autumn hike visit to be combined with further impressions of the "Island of Cranes".
