About Sommertheater Schaprode

Open-air theatre, right by the water: The Sommertheater Schaprode takes place at the harbour of the small Rügen village and is part of the FALLADA LAND cultural project by Boris Ben Siegel. In 2026, "Die schiesswütigen Frauen von der Öhe" (The Gun-Happy Women of Öhe) is on the programme – a scenic play about Ida and Laurette Schilling, two extraordinary women who fought for their rights, their freedom, and their lives on the small island of Öhe. A play that combines regional history, literature, and the maritime backdrop of Schaprode into a special theatre experience.

Theatre at the Harbour

The Sommertheater Schaprode brings theatre to an unusual location: directly at the harbour of the small village of Schaprode on the west coast of Rügen. The maritime backdrop – Bodden waters, fishing boats, the wide sky over the island – becomes part of the production. The Sommertheater is a project of the cultural association FALLADA LAND, initiated by theatre maker Boris Ben Siegel, who brings the regional literary and cultural history of Vorpommern to the stage.

FALLADA LAND

FALLADA LAND is a cultural project dedicated to the connection between literature, region, and theatre. The name refers to the writer Hans Fallada, who lived and worked in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The 2026 Sommertheater is the project's third summer theatre production. Boris Ben Siegel is responsible for the artistic development, Andreas Krüger for directing and musical accompaniment.

Die schiesswütigen Frauen von der Öhe

The 2026 play tells the story of Ida and Laurette Schilling – two extraordinary women who fought for their rights, their freedom, and their lives on the small island of Öhe near Schaprode. The scenic play is based on the book "Erst wägen, dann wagen" (First Weigh, Then Dare), in which Lars Herde, together with Mathias Schilling – a descendant of the two sisters – documented the significance of the story from Laurette's notes. There are also references to Hans Fallada's novel "Wir hatten mal ein Kind" (We Once Had a Child).

Schaprode and the Island of Öhe

Schaprode is located in the Vorpommern-Rügen district in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The small peninsula of Öhe lies directly off the village, and the play draws on its history. The Sommertheater thus combines location, history, and stage in a way that inextricably links the theatre experience with the landscape of West Rügen.
