Advent market on the historic market square of the half-timbered town of Herborn
Herborn on the Dill is one of the best-preserved half-timbered small towns in Hesse. The historic center with its market square, tall town hall, and a continuous half-timbered backdrop around the castle is a protected monument as a whole. It is precisely this setting that defines the Herborn Christmas Market: not a large fair with hundreds of stalls, but an intimate Advent atmosphere with the town as the main attraction.
At dusk, thousands of gable lamps are switched on, attached to the half-timbered facades, bathing the old town in warm, golden light. It is one of the most characteristic light scenes of the Hessian Advent season, making the town a popular photographic subject. Strolling through the alleys in the evening feels like stepping back in time.
Around the market square, a manageable but atmospheric Christmas area is created. Several stalls offer mulled wine, bratwurst, waffles, candied almonds, and small handicraft items. A nostalgic children's carousel turns for the little ones. The concept is deliberately kept small — the town relies on the effect of the old town itself.
The program highlight is the Open Singing on the third Sunday of Advent with the local choirmaster and brass choirs from the surrounding districts of Hörbach and Schönbach. For children, artists visit the town several times during Advent: balloon modeling with Marcelo Bamberger and bubble shows with David Friedrich.
The market runs daily from the opening day until December 30th. It is closed only on the three Christmas days (December 24th–26th). This positions Herborn as an Advent destination that remains open between Christmas and New Year's Eve — a plus for family visits between the holidays.
The 2026 edition runs in the usual format throughout the entire Advent season until the end of December. The market is compact: a few selected stalls around the market square, complemented by a children's carousel and the distinctive lighting concept of the gable lamps illuminating the entire old town.
Admission completely free. Mulled wine approx. €4–5 (with cup deposit), bratwurst €4–5, carousel ride for children approx. €2.
