Top wineries from Rheingau in the historic town park of the half-timbered town
Herborn may not be located in a wine-growing region — the Lahn valley in Middle Hesse is beer country. But for almost 30 years, the Herborner Weinfest has been bringing Rheingau wine to Herborn: a three-day taste-off in the town park that has long since become a fixture in the Middle Hessian summer calendar. The organizer is Stadtmarketing Herborn GmbH.
The 35th edition will take place in 2026. The choice of the town park as the venue is programmatic: old trees, wide meadows, and in the background the silhouette of the historic half-timbered old town with the famous Herborn Castle. Here you can sit at a picnic table, the wine is served in 0.1 or 0.2-liter glasses, and the atmosphere is relaxed.
For almost three decades, exclusively Rheingau vintners have been coming to Herborn. In 2026, participating wineries include: Weingut Johannes Ohlig, Villa Gutenberg, Weingut Lorenz Kunz, Sechzehnein&vierzig, and Weingut Trenz. Riesling, Spätburgunder, rosé wine, and sparkling wine — the entire spectrum of Rheingau on two hectares of meadow.
Catering is also part of the experience: Flammeria and Crêperia Ried serve tarte flambée and crêpes, the Hexenküche (Witch's Kitchen) is the culinary snack station, and baker Timo Kümmel bakes fresh pretzels and cuts cheese daily.
The wine festival opens on Friday — with high-ranking guests from Rheingau: Wine royalty are regular guests at the opening. There will be live music on Friday and Saturday evenings from around 7 p.m., and the festival starts daily at 4 p.m..
