One of the oldest markets in Central Hesse — since 1465 in Herborn's half-timbered old town
In 2026, the Herborn Martini Market looks back on a 561-year history: first documented mention in 1465 — making it one of the oldest continuously held markets in Central Hesse. The name derives from St. Martin's Day (November 11th), the traditional date for such autumn markets in the Rhineland and Hesse regions, when trade took place after the harvest.
Classically, the Martini Market lasts from Friday to Monday — market days in full swing are Sunday and Monday, with the Werbering calendar indicating the main market days for 2026 as Sunday, November 8th, and Monday, November 9th. The setup weekend and prelude program begins on Friday, effectively creating a four-day autumn festival.
Over 100 exhibitors set up their stalls throughout the half-timbered old town and on the adjacent market grounds. The offerings range from textiles (a classic core market area) to leather goods, shoes, gift items, crafts, household goods, and regional culinary specialties. Shops in the town center use the market period for special late-night shopping days.
On the market grounds, there are amusement rides — Ferris wheel, bumper cars, children's carousels, shooting galleries, and food stalls. Monday is traditionally Family Day with reduced prices for many attractions — an incentive that attracts families from the entire Lahn-Dill district and surrounding areas.
The highlight is the grand fireworks display on Sunday evening around 7:00 PM. Against the backdrop of the historic town with its half-timbered facades and castle complex, a dramatic spectacle unfolds, drawing thousands of visitors each year.
With its 560-year tradition and characteristic blend of market, crafts, amusement rides, and fireworks, the Martini Market is not only a major local event but also an attraction for visitors from the wider Lahn-Dill district, the Westerwald, and the Hessian Hinterland.
The 2026 edition continues the 560-year tradition. Framed by the setup weekend starting Friday, it effectively becomes a four-day autumn market event in the half-timbered town.
