Allgäu Summer Festival with Two Stages Beneath the Mountains
The Oberstdorfer Dorffest is one of the warmest and most traditional summer events in the Allgäu region. On a Saturday in midsummer, the town transforms into a festival mile: on two stages – in the Kurpark and the Pfarrgarten – brass bands, regional bands, and dance groups perform, interspersed with children's carousels, and the aroma of Allgäu specialties fills the air.
The village festival traditionally begins with rifle volleys from the local shooting clubs – a true Allgäu opening. Afterwards, the Mayor and the Director of Tourism toast the festival with the ceremonial tapping of the first keg. This officially opens the day, and the stages begin their performances.
The culinary focus is on the Allgäu: Krautkrapfen (cabbage pasta), Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle), Käsespätzle (cheese noodles), Kässpätzle, and of course, Allgäu mountain cheese – accompanied by beer from regional breweries and apple cider. The Allgäu specialties are prepared at various stands in the Kurpark and Pfarrgarten by local restaurateurs and clubs.
The village festival is decidedly family-friendly. A children's area offers face painting, a carousel, trampoline, and various games (goal wall shooting, shooting gallery, shuffleboard). The Oberstdorf Volunteer Fire Department is also present with rides and activities – a popular attraction for children.
With around 9,500 inhabitants, Oberstdorf is Germany's southernmost market town and one of the most famous holiday resorts in the Oberallgäu region. Nestled amidst the Allgäu Alps (Nebelhorn, Söllereck, Fellhorn), it is an international winter sports center (Four Hills Tournament, Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill) and a summer destination for hiking, cycling, and wellness. The Dorffest interrupts the usual tourist routine with its own event, organized by Tourismus Oberstdorf, where locals and guests celebrate together.
Unlike many open-air festivals, the Dorffest takes place whatever the weather – the two venues offer partial roofing, and the festival program will be adapted if necessary, but not cancelled.
The Oberstdorfer Dorffest 2026 is a classic summer Saturday in the Allgäu. On two stages – in the Kurpark and Pfarrgarten – brass bands, regional bands, and dance groups alternate, alongside stalls offering Allgäu cuisine, beer, and cider.
This year's festival motto »A halbe nammas guets zum easse und…« (Allgäu dialect for »half an hour of something good to eat and…«) perfectly captures the spirit of the festival: cozy, hospitable, and true to the Allgäu. For families, there's a children's carousel, face painting, games, and fire truck rides.
