One of Germany's oldest folk festivals — 462nd edition at Pentecost 2026
The Kaltennordheim Heiratsmarkt dates back to the year 1564. In the predominantly Catholic Rhön region, it was customary in the 16th century for young men and women from the surrounding villages to gather in the market town on a set date to meet and, if applicable, express intentions of marriage. What began as pragmatic courtship has grown into a folk festival over the centuries — today one of the oldest and best-known in Southern Thuringia and the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district.
Even today, a bridal couple is at the center of the festival. The city administration seeks a couple from the region willing to marry each year, who appear publicly during the festival, participate in the parade and activities, and symbolically continue the Heiratsmarkt tradition. In some years, marriages were actually performed publicly, while in others, only a "mock" wedding was celebrated. The search for 2026 is confirmed — the bridal couple will be presented shortly before the festival.
The festival grounds extend from the market square across the castle courtyard to the adjacent sports field. Over 100 traders and showmen set up their stalls — amusement rides (Ferris wheel, carousels, bumper cars, swings), shooting galleries, farmers' market with regional products from the Rhön, bratwurst stands, festival tents. Live music (rock cover bands, folk music, DJ sets) alternates on several stages. Highlight on Whit Monday: the grand fireworks display over Kaltennordheim, visible far and wide in the Rhön.
The 462nd Heiratsmarkt 2026 runs from Friday to Tuesday of the Pentecost week (May 22–26). The kickoff on Friday is a football tournament on the sports field, with concerts in the castle courtyard in the evening featuring "The Dogs & DJs" and rock bands. Saturday is the opening with a keg tapping ceremony and the presentation of the bridal couple, live music with "Die Rockers" and "Team Torsten." Sunday (Pentecost) features football tournaments and rock concerts in the evening with "WHY NOT" and "Mambo & Cash" with free admission. Whit Monday is the ceremonial highlight with a parade, Pentecost service, lunch, and grand fireworks. Tuesday is Family Day — musical morning pint, open house at the fire department, children's program.
Kaltennordheim is a traditional market town in the south of the Hohe Rhön Nature Park, in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district. With just under 7,000 inhabitants (including the districts incorporated since 2019), it is a central hub in a sparsely populated, natural low mountain range landscape. Those extending their Pentecost weekend can hike in the Hohe Rhön after the Heiratsmarkt, visit the Schwarzes Moor (Black Moor), or explore the nearby UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
The 462nd Heiratsmarkt 2026 runs from May 22 to 26 over the Pentecost holidays. The festival grounds at Kaltennordheim Castle Courtyard open on Friday afternoon, with the program extending to Family Day on Tuesday. Tradition since 1564 — yet contemporary: live music from rock and pop, modern family entertainment, a classic folk festival with amusement rides and a festival tent.
