Heimatfest – An Upper Palatinate Tradition

The Heimatfest is a typical Upper Palatinate form of festival: a club and folk festival spanning village or market town communities, held at irregular intervals (usually every 5–10 years) when a significant club anniversary, a historical date, or a special occasion arises. In Winklarn, a market town with around 1,500 inhabitants in the Schwandorf district, the Heimatfest will be held in 2026 and is the most important local festival of the decade.

Winklarn Community Association as Organizer

The Winklarn Community Association is the organizer of the festival – an alliance of all clubs in the market town: fire brigade, marksmen, traditional costume association, music band, sports clubs, heritage society. They organize the festival on a voluntary basis. Members erect the festival tent, arrange the program, host guests, manage the parade, and ensure the festivities conclude. This collaborative organization makes the Heimatfest a true expression of village club life.

Five Days of Festival Program

The 2026 Heimatfest runs from Thursday, May 21st to Monday, May 25th, 2026. Opening on Thursday evening with a stand concert by several music bands and the parade into the festival grounds. The following days feature evening programs in the festival tent with various brass bands and bands from the Upper Palatinate. The highlight is the parade on Sunday afternoon with traditional costume groups, festival floats, and music bands from all over the Upper Palatinate. The festival concludes with a closing celebration on Monday evening.

Brass Music at the Center

Several brass bands shape the music program: the Winklarn Music Band, plus bands from Oberviechtach, Schönsee, Rötz, and other neighboring communities. One of the most significant acts is the Kapelle Josef Menzl, a brass band ensemble well-known throughout the Upper Palatinate and all of Bavaria. A total of over 10 music groups will be heard over the five festival days.

Festival Tent Atmosphere

The large festival tent on the grounds at Johann-Metzler-Straße offers a classic Upper Palatinate festival tent atmosphere: long wooden benches, liter steins of Upper Palatinate beer, hearty festival cuisine (Schäuferla, Sauerbraten, Krenfleisch, Hendl), along with dance evenings with live music until midnight. Table reservations can be made via the festival website.

Winklarn – A Market Town in the Upper Palatinate

Winklarn is located in the northern Upper Palatinate hill country between Schwandorf and Cham, directly on Federal Road 22 between Oberviechtach and Rötz. The market town belongs to the administrative community of Oberviechtach. There is a partnership with the neighboring Austrian town of Winklarn (Lower Austria) – the Austrian sister community regularly participates in the parade.

A Cross-Generational Festival

The Heimatfest is a festival that involves all generations: children with the children's program, teenagers in the festival tent, parents enjoying the brass music, grandparents watching the traditional costume parade. The social core of Upper Palatinate village life.
