Two-day international street theatre festival in Bassum's city centre with free admission
Piazzetta is one of the most unusual festivals in the Diepholz district: For one weekend, the city centre of the Lower Saxon town of Bassum transforms into a stage where international street artists present their shows. The festival thrives on encounters – between the city and the stage, between the audience and the performers, between tradition and the avant-garde.
In 2026, four international acts will grace the city centre squares. The Italian company Ludilò brings poetic movement theatre, the Argentinian Muruya Circo combines acrobatics and dance, Rob Roy Collins from England plays with British humour and slapstick, and Matthias Romir from Nürnberg offers a German perspective with object theatre.
The performances take place at various venues in the city centre: the market square, Mittelstraße, Freudenburg, and their surrounding areas are incorporated into the festival plan. Each venue has its own atmosphere, making the festival a stroll through the cultural heart of Bassum. On Saturday evening, the team will bring the programmes together in the variety show "Stelle di Notte" at Freudenburg.
Piazzetta is financed through grants, sponsorships, and a collection hat passed around after each performance. Admission to the shows is free; the hat after the performance is the primary source of income for the artists. The volunteer Piazzetta team organizes the festival through months of preparation, ensuring a cultural constant in the Diepholz event calendar.
Over two days, the city centre becomes a packed programme of acrobatics, clowning, object theatre, and movement theatre. The venues change, the audience moves along, and encounters between artists and spectators emerge in the squares, characteristic of the street theatre format.
On Saturday evening, the variety show at Freudenburg brings together the programmes in a joint performance, making the evening the festival's highlight.
The full programme, including venues and times, will be published by the Piazzetta team in spring 2026 on piazzetta-bassum.de.
