Four days of Schützenfest by the St. Josef-Schützenbruderschaft 1821 Vogelsrath in the Lower Rhine Schwalmtal
Schwalmtal, with just under 19,000 inhabitants in the Viersen district of North Rhine-Westphalia, lies on the transition from the Rhenish Lower Rhine to the Dutch border. The municipality was formed in 1970 from the villages of Amern, Waldniel, and several farms along the Schwalm river; Vogelsrath is one of these smaller districts, with its own village community life and its own marksmen's brotherhood.
The St. Josef-Schützenbruderschaft Vogelsrath was founded in 1821, making it over 200 years old. It belongs to the West German district association of the Bund der historischen deutschen Schützenbruderschaften (Federation of Historical German Marksmen's Brotherhoods) — the Catholic-influenced tradition of German marksmen's clubs, which have their roots in the Middle Ages and parish communities. The patron saint is St. Joseph (patron of workers), and the brotherhood is closely linked to the parish of St. Matthias.
In 2026, the Heimat- und Schützenfest in Vogelsrath will take place under the motto "New strength from old roots" — a commitment to the 200-year tradition of the club and to the still vibrant village community. Four days of events between Ascension Day and the following Sunday shape the weekend.
Schützenfeste in the Lower Rhine region follow a dense Catholic-Rhenish choreography: marching through the village in festive attire, drum corps with timpani and drums, joint masses, speeches by the mayor, communal meals at long tables. For those coming from the Protestant north or from urban environments, this is a form of folk culture that has hardly changed — and it is precisely this reliability that makes it appealing.
The parish of St. Matthias Schwalmtal unites several marksmen's brotherhoods — in addition to Vogelsrath, also in Waldniel, Amern, and smaller districts. Each has its own date in the annual calendar, its own festival tent, its own history. The Vogelsrath festival is one of the earliest in the year, thus marking the start of the Schwalmtal marksmen's season.
The 2026 Heimat- und Schützenfest of the St. Josef-Schützenbruderschaft 1821 Vogelsrath e.V. will take place from May 14 to 17, 2026, in Schwalmtal-Vogelsrath. Motto: "New strength from old roots."
