Three days of mining tradition and live music in the heart of Heiligenwald
The Heiligenwalder Bergmannstage are among the most traditional village festivals in the Saarland district of Neunkirchen. Heiligenwald, today a district of the municipality of Schiffweiler, owes its existence to coal mining: in the mid-18th century, large hard coal deposits were discovered under the village, shaping the character of the entire region. With the annual Bergmannstage, the community keeps this heritage alive.
In 2026, the festival will celebrate its 40th edition, marking a remarkable anniversary that underscores its roots in Saarland club life. The Bergmannsfest is organized jointly by the Heiligenwald local council, local clubs, and the cultural office of the municipality of Schiffweiler. The patron and mayor traditionally tap the first beer keg, thus opening three days of programming.
The culinary offerings are managed by the Heiligenwald clubs themselves: Grumbeerkichelcher (Saarland potato pancakes), fries, bacon waffles, bratwurst, and beer characterize the scene. Coffee and cake on Saturday afternoon are just as much a must as the ecumenical church service on Sunday morning, which underscores the festival's religious and communal character.
Musically, the festival relies on a mix of the Saarland Mining Band, the Harmonie Schiffweiler music club, cover bands, and Schlager artists. Well-known names from previous years include the dialect combo „Die Konsorten“, singer Gerd Zinsmeister, and the band „Changes“. On Sunday afternoon, the program is aimed at families with children's entertainment, a raffle, and a morning pint concert.
Heiligenwald is just a few kilometers from the Reden adventure site – one of the largest industrial monuments in the Saarland and the former site of the Reden mine. Visitors to the Bergmannstage can combine their stay with a trip to the Reden site or the Gondwana experience and thus immerse themselves deeply in Saarland's mining history.
The anniversary edition in 2026 is organized by the Heiligenwald local council together with local clubs and the Schiffweiler cultural office. The complete program is expected to be published in spring 2026 – the proven structure with the beer keg tapping on Friday, club gastronomy, the mining band, and cover bands will be maintained.
