Open-air festival in Märkisches Viertel, organized entirely by young people
The Märkisches Viertel is Berlin's largest housing estate – 17,000 apartments, built between 1963 and 1974, long treated as a symbolic prefabricated housing estate. Today, the neighborhood in the Reinickendorf district is one of Berlin's most diverse residential areas, with a large youth population and an active subculture scene. It was precisely from this context that the Heatwave Festival emerged in 2022 – as an attempt by young activists from Märkisches Viertel to build a festival according to their own ideas.
What makes the Heatwave Festival special: everything is organized by young people from Reinickendorf. Programming, stage technology, booking, safety concept, awareness team, catering – no professional agency handles the festival. Financed by the Berlin Senate Department and the Reinickendorf District Office, plus sponsorship from local companies and crowdfunding. Free admission, no sponsor logo chaos – the authenticity of the format has earned the festival a loyal local audience over four years.
The Heatwave lineup focuses on Berlin's subculture beyond established festival headliners. Well-known Reinickendorf Hip-Hop acts, young Berlin indie bands, Afro-Beats artists from the Berlin diaspora, techno DJs from the neighborhoods – not a Lollapalooza-caliber lineup, but young Berlin voices that often lack a stage beyond the Reeperbahn Festival routines. With over 30 live acts in two days, Heatwave is one of Berlin's most concentrated district festivals.
On July 3rd and 4th, 2026, the Heatwave Festival will kick off for the fifth time on the festival meadow at Seggeluchbecken in Märkisches Viertel. The lineup, featuring 30+ live acts, focuses on Berlin's subculture: Hip-Hop, Pop, Afro-Beats, and Techno from Reinickendorf and the Berlin scene. Entirely organized by young people from the district – from programming to stage technology to the safety concept. Free admission. The Reinickendorf district administration and the Berlin Senate Department jointly finance it, supplemented by local sponsorship and crowdfunding contributions.
The complete lineup for the Heatwave Festival 2026 will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the festival on festivalreinickendorf.eu/festival-aktuell and Instagram @heatwave_festival. Key points for the 5th edition:
