Havelkarawane
65 musicians on the water — the opening of the Brandenburger Havelsommer
2026
About Havelkarawane
Havelkarawane — edition 2026
Organizer: Brandenburger Kultursommer with the City of Brandenburg an der Havel. The Havelkarawane is one of Germany's most unusual music formats — almost a performative sound installation as an open-air event. It combines Brandenburg's water identity feature with a contemporary musical approach.
The audience stands along the banks, sits on the bridges, goes for a walk — or joins in their own boat. The caravan moves from venue to venue, the soundscape changes permanently.

The City on the Water
Brandenburg an der Havel — the old Mark capital with its three island cities Altstadt, Neustadt, and Dominsel — is a city on and by the water. The Havel river and its canals shape the cityscape more than anywhere else in Brandenburg. It is precisely this water identity that the Havelkarawane celebrates every year on the first weekend of June — as the opening event of the summer-long "Havelsommer" cultural program.
The Concept
Imagine: 65 musicians sitting, standing, or drifting on barges, wooden boats, platforms, rafts, and stand-up paddles — playing, singing, performing as they move through the Havel and its tributaries. The audience stands on the bank, sits in boats, or strolls across the bridges. The music comes from the water, the soundscape changes with every bridge arch, every bend in the river.
Style Mix: A Cappella to Rock
The musical mix is programmatically broad: a cappella ensembles, jazz combos, rock bands, pop duos, classical string quartets on platform boats. The concept deliberately gives each musician small stages so that the sound can carry over the water — no amplifier battles, but acoustic and semi-electronic setups.
Opening of the Havelsommer
The Havelkarawane marks the beginning of the official Havelsommer Brandenburg — a cultural program with over 120 events at more than 25 venues throughout the summer months. Concerts, theater, readings, sports, participatory formats — the Havelsommer is the city's most extensive cultural program. The Havelkarawane is its emotional kick-off highlight.
The Route: Connecting Three Island Cities
The caravan moves from its starting point through the waterways of Altstadt, Neustadt, and Dominsel — an acoustic city tour. The best viewing spots: the bridges (e.g., Krakauer Brücke, Steinbrücke), the promenade along the Niederhavel, the Dominsel with Petriplatz.
