The Köllertal Town Celebrates its Hauptkirmes Event
Püttlingen, with around 19,000 inhabitants, is one of the most vibrant medium-sized towns in the Saarbrücken regional association and bears the epithet Köllertalstadt. Püttlingen received town rights in 1968 – its self-image as an independent medium-sized center between Saarbrücken and Saarlouis continues to shape its city festival culture today. The Hauptkirmes is the most important date in the city's annual calendar and traditionally attracts visitors from the entire Köllertal, the Warndt, and the Saarbrücken surrounding area for a weekend in mid-August.
What Makes the Hauptkirmes Special
At its heart is a classic Volksfest: Ferris wheel, bumper cars, carousels for children, strength testers, shooting galleries, and of course, Saarland food stalls with Schwenker (grilled meat skewers), bratwurst, potato pancakes, Lyoner cheese platter, and candied almonds. In parallel, the city organizes the Stadtfest with several stages featuring local bands, cover bands, and the typical Saarland Schlager/party acts. FV 08 Püttlingen is present with its own stand; other clubs such as carnival societies, music associations, and sports clubs also serve visitors and enrich the program.
History as a Mining Town
The Hauptkirmes has its roots in the everyday life of miners: With the opening of the Viktoria I (1866) and Viktoria II (1881) mines, Püttlingen grew rapidly. Coal mining shaped the town well into the 20th century; the city festival was traditionally the occasion when the miners spent their summer wages and celebrated with their families. Today, street names and the industrial heritage recall this past – but the festival itself remains charmingly down-to-earth.
Date and Rhythm
The Hauptkirmes traditionally takes place in mid-August: 2023 from August 18th to 20th, 2024 from August 16th to 18th. The exact date for 2026 is usually announced by the city administration about three months in advance; the weekend of August 14th to 16th, 2026 is expected. Note: Püttlingen has two other major events during the year – the Frühjahrsfest (Spring Festival) in April and the Rocca del Schlacko festival on the Sauwasen (Köllerbach) on the second weekend of August, which attracts around 25,000 visitors.
Hauptkirmes Püttlingen — edition 2026
The city of Püttlingen plans the 2026 Hauptkirmes, as in previous years, as a three-day Volksfest in the city center around Rathausplatz. Based on previous years' dates (2023: Aug 18–20, 2024: Aug 16–18, 2025: from Aug 16), the weekend of August 14th to 16th, 2026 is the most likely date; the final date will be officially confirmed in early summer 2026.
The usual concept remains: fairground operations with rides, several stages, FV 08 Püttlingen and other clubs as caterers, Sunday Frühschoppen, and live program in the evenings.

- Friday evening — Opening with keg tapping ceremony, fairground operations from the afternoon, live music on the main stage
- Saturday — Full Kirmes operation all day, stage program with local bands and cover bands from the afternoon
- Sunday — Family day with Frühschoppen in the morning, reduced ride prices for children, closing with a fireworks display (if following previous years' patterns)

Getting There
By Car: A8 exit Püttlingen, then follow signs towards the city center. Around 15 minutes from Saarbrücken, 20 minutes from Saarlouis. During the Kirmes, the city center is closed to through traffic; designated parking areas around the town center.
By Bus and Train
Püttlingen is accessible via the saarVV bus line 142 from Saarbrücken (approx. 30 minutes). Püttlingen-Köllerbach station is on the outskirts of the town, with good connections to the Saarbahn line S1.
Admission
Admission to the Hauptkirmes and Stadtfest is free. Only rides (~€3–5), food, and drinks at the stalls are paid for.
Accommodation
There are a few hotels and guesthouses in Püttlingen itself; alternatively, stay overnight in Saarbrücken (15 min by car). For longer visits, the four-star level in Saarbrücken's city center is recommended.
Tips
Come on Sunday with the family – the carousels run in the morning, and the traditional Frühschoppen (morning pint) with club catering takes place at noon. For concerts and a lively atmosphere, plan for Friday and Saturday evenings. Sports shoes and cash are recommended.
