Traditional Lower Franconian Kirchweih with fairground, rides, and city center market
For centuries, the Haßfurt Kirchweih has been the central church consecration festival of the district town of Haßfurt in the Lower Franconian district of Haßberge. It is celebrated annually around the third Sunday in October and is one of the largest folk festivals between Bamberg and Schweinfurt on the Main River.
Haßfurt, with its approximately 13,500 inhabitants, is located on the lower Main River, about 30 kilometers east of Schweinfurt and 35 kilometers north of Bamberg. The town is the administrative seat of the Haßberge district and the gateway to the Mittelgebirge (low mountain range) of the same name. The historic old town with its market square, St. Kilian's parish church, and 14th-century towers is the venue for the Kirchweih market.
The Kirchweih traditionally lasts for four days — from Friday to Monday. On the fairground, showmen set up carousels, amusement rides, shooting galleries, and food stalls. Beer is served in the festival tent, and bands and brass bands play on weekends.
The highlight is the Kirchweih market on Sunday: From 1 PM to 6 PM, the historic city center transforms into a large marketplace. Vendors offer traditional costumes, arts and crafts, gift items, regional specialties, and seasonal products. At the same time, local shops open their doors for the Sunday shopping event.
The fairground offers showman classics: carousel, bumper cars, shooting galleries, candy stalls, bratwurst, and gingerbread. Families will find children's carousels and smaller rides — the festival is explicitly family-friendly.
Franconian beer is served in the festival tent — in Haßfurt, this is anchored by Spital-Bräu Haßfurt with its regional specialties. In addition, there are Franconian specialties: Schäuferla (pork shoulder), bratwurst, Sauerbraten (marinated roast), Pressack (head cheese), cheese fondue.
In addition to the main town, Haßfurt comprises several districts (Augsfeld, Sailershausen, Sylbach, Uchenhofen, Unter- and Oberhohenried, Wülflingen). Each district also celebrates its own Kirchweihen — however, the larger and more regionally significant one is the Kirchweih of the main town.
The 2026 edition of the Haßfurt Kirchweih is officially scheduled from October 18th to 21st, 2026 (Source: Haßfurt Kirchweih dates 2025–2030, published by the City of Haßfurt). Four days of folk festival program between the fairground, festival tent, and historic city center.
Sunday, October 18th, is the main day of activity: From 1 PM to 6 PM, the city center around the market square transforms into a large Kirchweih market with vendors, regional specialties, traditional costumes, and gift items. At the same time, local shops open their doors for Sunday shopping. The entire showman operation runs concurrently on the fairground.
