Open-air concert on the outer bailey of Hardenberg Castle in Velbert's Neviges district
The Hardenberg OpenAir is one of the most charming small open-air concerts in the southwestern Ruhr area. The venue is the outer bailey of Hardenberg Castle, a historic castle in Velbert's Neviges district (Mettmann district). 2026 marks the 7th edition – a format that focuses on an intimate atmosphere and free admission, rather than festival megalomania.
The outer bailey of Hardenberg Castle belongs to the castle complex of the von Hardenberg family, one of the most important Westphalian noble residences. In 2018, a fire devastated large parts of the castle; the gradual reconstruction has been ongoing since then. The Hardenberg OpenAir is part of this context: it is also a solidarity event to support the reconstruction measures. Donations are possible directly on site.
On this evening, the outer bailey is exclusively illuminated. Light installations transform the historic complex into a stage backdrop that few concerts in NRW can offer. The open grounds offer space for several hundred visitors without becoming a mass event.
The concept relies on live bands – in previous years, regularly cover bands such as QuerfeldBeat (rock covers across the decades), BallroomBlitz (70s covers), NightSpot, as well as invited guest musicians. The exact lineup for 2026 will be announced by the Velbert City Marketing through official channels.
Admission is free. Food and drinks are sold on site – an important contribution to refinancing. Those who attend the concert should bring their wallet for the bar, not for the ticket.
Neviges is one of three districts of the city of Velbert (Mettmann district), alongside the central district Velbert-Mitte and Velbert-Langenberg. Neviges is primarily known for its Pilgrimage Church – an impressive concrete structure by architect Gottfried Böhm from the 1960s, one of the most important examples of modern sacred architecture. Hardenberg Castle is located on the southern outskirts overlooking the Hardenberger Bachtal valley.
Velbert belongs to the Niederbergische cities between Düsseldorf, Wuppertal, and the Ruhr area. Known as a city of tools and locksmiths (keyword: "Schlüsselstadt" - "Key City"), Velbert and its districts offer hiking opportunities, the Bergisches Land region, and an active local cultural scene. The Hardenberg OpenAir is one of the city's most important summer cultural events.
In 2026, the Velbert City Marketing continues the tradition of the Hardenberg OpenAir. The exact lineup will be announced via the official Velbert channels. The concert is part of a fundraising effort to support the reconstruction of Hardenberg Castle after the 2018 fire.
Free admission. Food and drinks on site. Donations welcome.
