Chamber music in the Romanesque brick church near Bützow
Kloster Rühn, located about three kilometers southwest of Bützow in the Rostock district, was founded in 1232 as a Benedictine convent and is one of the oldest preserved building complexes in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The associated Klosterkirche — a 43-meter-long, flat-roofed brick building from around 1280 — is one of the characteristic examples of North German brick Gothic with Romanesque origins. The medieval masonry of the three monastery wings has been preserved.
For years, the Klosterkirche Rühn has been a regular venue for the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern — one of Germany's largest classical music festivals, offering over 150 concerts in extraordinary venues throughout Mecklenburg-Vorpommern every summer. In 2010, Kloster Rühn and its Klosterverein received the Nordkurier Venue Award from the Festspiele for being a particularly innovative and exemplary cultural and concert venue.
The concert on August 21, 2026, at 7:00 PM, is titled "Hommage à Robert Schumann — Festspiel-Gipfeltreffen" and features soloist Nils Mönkemeyer (viola). Programmatically, it draws connections between composers of the Romantic era, with Robert Schumann's work at its center. The exact program and participating artists will be announced on the Festspiele MV website.
The concert at the Klosterkirche Rühn is one of the several hundred concert offerings of the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern 2026. The renowned violist Nils Mönkemeyer takes center stage, presenting a program centered around Robert Schumann and his contemporaries, along with other soloists.
The selection of works and the ensemble — typically a chamber music formation of strings and piano — will be published on the Festspiele's program page. The title "Festspiel-Gipfeltreffen" (Festival Summit Meeting) signals a format featuring multiple prominent soloists performing together at the highest level. The Klosterkirche, with its 43m long, acoustically distinctive space, provides an ideal setting for chamber music with clear lines.
