Advent in the oldest wine town in Franconia
Hammelburg on the Franconian Saale is considered the oldest wine town in Franconia and boasts a particularly atmospheric historic old town. On the first weekend of Advent, it becomes the backdrop for the Hammelburg Old Town Advent: festively decorated alleys, squares, and especially the picturesque courtyards open their doors to visitors.
Courtyards full of Christmas magic
The special feature of the Hammelburg Old Town Advent is the Christmas stroll through the courtyards: Many courtyards and squares in the old town are used for events, offering regional delicacies, music, mulled wine, and arts and crafts. On and around the market square, guests can expect an extensive range of Christmas items, nativity scenes, accessories, and handmade goods.
Enjoyment and supporting program
For refreshment, there is mulled wine, bratwurst, sweet crepes, and many other culinary specialties. Advent sounds drift through the old town, and a varied supporting program on both days rounds off the Old Town Advent. It is organized by the City of Hammelburg together with the Association for Economy and City Marketing.
Old Town Advent — edition 2026
The Hammelburg Old Town Advent traditionally takes place on the first Advent weekend; in 2026, this falls on the weekend at the end of November. On both days, the historic old town becomes a large pre-Christmas bazaar: on and around the market square, as well as in the idyllic courtyards, there will be Christmas items, nativity scenes, accessories, and arts and crafts.
For refreshment, there will be mulled wine, bratwurst, sweet crepes, and other specialties. Advent sounds will fill the old town, and a varied supporting program on both days will round off the festival. The exact opening hours and the 2026 program will be announced by the Hammelburg Tourist Information in the event calendar.

The exact opening hours for 2026 will be published by the Hammelburg Tourist Information. For comparison: in 2025, the market square was open Saturday 3–8 PM, the courtyards 3–10 PM, and on Sunday 12–6 PM each day.

Getting there
Hammelburg is located in the district of Bad Kissingen on the Franconian Saale, accessible via the A 7 motorway (Hammelburg exit) and the Gemünden–Bad Kissingen railway line. The Old Town Advent takes place around the market square and in the courtyards of the old town.
