One Night, 30+ Stages, 200+ Program Items
Since 2004, the Hamburger Theaternacht has been the grand showcase for the city's independent and institutional stages. On one Saturday in September, over 30 venues open simultaneously — from the Schauspielhaus, Thalia Theater, St. Pauli Theater, Schmidt Theater, and Kammerspiele to small off-stages, cabaret stages, and neighborhood theatres. Those who buy a ticket can switch between all venues and see as many program items as they can manage in one evening.
The program is divided into three blocks. In the afternoon (3–7 PM), the family program runs — puppet shows, workshops, child-friendly productions. Three to four children per adult get in free. In the evening (7 PM–1 AM), the main program takes over: excerpts from the current repertoire, specially developed Theaternacht productions, backstage tours, readings, concerts. From 11 PM, the official aftershow takes place at the Schmidtchen on the Reeperbahn.
Free shuttle buses between the major venues are included in the ticket price. Additionally, ticket buyers can use the StadtRAD bicycle rental system or Lime e-scooters free of charge. This transforms Hamburg into a single, connected stage city for one theatre night — "climate-friendly, fast, and uncomplicated," as the organizer writes.
Several program items are specially accessible: audio description for visually impaired visitors, induction loops for hearing aid users, surtitles, and sign language interpreters in individual performances. Hamburg Tourism GmbH promotes the festival annually as a premium event with high reach.
One night, one city, one ticket. Saturday, September 5, 2026, is the only day of the year when the entire Hamburg stage network is open simultaneously and offers a joint program. Those who start early — ideally from 3 PM with the family program — can visit five to ten venues in one night.
The complete 2026 program with daily schedules per stage will be published in August on theaternacht-hamburg.org. Those familiar with the aftershow area on the Reeperbahn know that the night often only truly begins there.
