Winter fairytale between Marktkirche and Roter Turm
The Hallescher Wintermarkt is Halle's most elegant answer to the cold season after Christmas. While stalls elsewhere disappear as early as December 24th, around 35 stands in the central Marktplatz simply continue — until Epiphany on January 6th. You stroll between the Roter Turm, Marktkirche, and Handel Monument, a glass of mulled wine in hand, and soak in the quieter, almost dreamlike atmosphere that the Hallescher Winter unfolds without pre-Christmas stress.
The offerings clearly focus on enjoyment and family: mulled wine, eggnog, bratwurst, and hearty regional classics, plus waffles, candied almonds, and crepes. Three children's carousels and a small miniature train take turns between the stalls, and a cozy lounge near the Handel Monument invites you to take a breather. With snow, traditional snowball fights are added — weather permitting.
Halle, Handel, and the Saalekreis
Halle (Saale), as an independent city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, is both the largest city in the state and the musical heart of Central Germany — the home of Georg Friedrich Handel. The Wintermarkt utilizes this backdrop: the Handel Monument in the middle of the market, the Marienbibliothek next door, the Marktkirche with its four distinctive towers in the background. For those who wish to venture further, quiet winter walks can be found in the Saalekreis and along the Saale riverbank.
