Walpurgisnacht with open-air theatre on the Hübichenstein rock stage and witches' party in Bad Grund
The Walpurgisnacht am Hübichenstein is considered one of the most spectacular Walpurgis celebrations in the Upper Harz. The Felsbühne am Hübichenstein, a striking dolomite formation above the spa town of Bad Grund, provides the unique natural backdrop for a multi-hour programme of children's festival, open-air theatre, live concert, and disco late into the night.
The centrepiece of the event is the open-air play about the Harz riflemen and the hermit of Winterberg. Staged with local amateur actors, the play draws on motifs from the Harz legend world and makes impressive use of the Hübichenstein's natural stage form with its rocks, caves, and plateaus.
Starting in the afternoon from 4 p.m., the Children's Walpurgis features a child-friendly programme: witch costume try-ons, broomstick crafting, short theatre performances, and interactive activities. This transforms Walpurgisnacht into a family event, gently introducing young visitors to the traditional custom.
After the play, the Harzklub takes over the stage with the Harzer Roller – a group of singers and musicians who preserve traditional Harz folk songs. The event concludes with the so-called Hell Disco, a witches' and devils' dance night under the open sky, celebrated well into the night depending on the weather.
The 2026 Walpurgisnacht continues the proven format of previous years, once again utilising the spectacular natural backdrop of the Hübichenstein rock stage. The event is one of the biggest attractions on April 30th in the Upper Harz and is supported by clubs, Harzklub groups, and volunteers.
